Welcome to the Offshore Marine Academy

We are an independent organization offering a comprehensive range of training programs and courses to newcomers to the offshore renewables sector. Based in Bristol, we use a combination of our own courses and external training resources to give people the necessary qualifications and experience for working offshore renewable industry, with a progressive support framework to ensure career development in an increasing global market sector.

The Academy has been set up by Offshore Marine Management with an objective to:

  • Address the widening gap between rapid growth of the offshore industry and the current supply of skilled personnel from academic and training institutions.
  • Ensure that the skills achieved by our trainees are in line with the progression and development of the industry technologies and standards.
  • Ensure the supply of quality personnel for the continued development of Offshore Marine Management in their current and future areas of expertise.
  • Create a portal for ambitious youth from the South West of England to enter the offshore sector, and achieve a level and breadth of training to enable them to progress into the area most suited to their strengths and skills set.
  • Offer quality assurance to its clients and industry members that current and future personnel are of the highest calibre and trained in accordance to their commercial needs

Introduction to Hydrography

Introduction:

This course is intended for people who have received no formal hydrographic training but who do work, or want to work in this field. The course provides a thorough knowledge for functionaries who frequently work with hydrographic recording and processing software and/or functionaries who frequently work together with hydrographers. No special preliminary training is required.

Training Content:

This course deals with the currently used hydrografic survey methods and measurement principles. The course deals with geodesy, positioning, data acquisition of single” and multibeam” echo-sounding systems and other sensors such as “Side Scan Sonar” and “Sub –bottom Profilers” with its accuracies. The following subjects are covered:

  • Geodesy: Ellipsoid, Geoid, Projections such as RD, Datum transformation, vertical datums and reference planes such as NAP
  • Positioning: Basic knowledge, GPS, DGPS, RTK, Underwater positioning
  • Bathymetry: General, Single beam, Multibeam
  • Other Systems: Side Scan Sonar, Sub-bottom Profiler, Sound velocity meter, Land Sureveyor’s equipment
  • Quality assurance: DGPS Accuracy, Error detection, Statistics
  • Tide: Theory, Observations, Predictions

Training Facility:

The training will take place at the Offshore Marine Academy premises in Bristol and will be delivered by Skilltrade. Full training facilities with individual work stations will ensure every course participant receives full hands-on experience throughout the course.

This programme will be delivered over a 2 day period.
