The type of vessels and projects worked on will reflect the recent academic training received. Trainees can put into practice what they have learnt in the classroom, contributing effectively and benefitting from a long-term understanding of professional skills.
The exact placement type will be determined by which operators are offshore at the time, although the trainees will generally be placed on the following vessel types: Crew Vessel, Anchor Handlers, Cable Support, Cable Installation and Diving Vessels.
Throughout the course, trainees aresent on field trips to broaden their understanding of the industry. They have the opportunity of seeing complete installations at first hand, meeting key industry players, and achieving a better grounding of knowledge.
At present, these trips include Hayle Wave Hub (Cornwall), Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm, the European Marine Energy Centre (Orkney), and a tour of the Cable Installation Vessel CS Sovereign.
Introduction:
This course is designed to meet the requirements for training laid out in the International Ship and Port facility Security code (ISPS code) and the guidance laid out in the SOLAS Regulations 1974. The Ship Security Officer position was formalised under the regulations listed above and the training has become mandatory for all those wishing to fulfil the role of Ship Security Officer on vessels over 500 tonnes. This course is suitable for those employed in the maritime industry seeking to engage in aspects of security, or who are seeking to become employed as a Ship Security Officer. It is also suitable for security professionals seeking to expand their employability or consultancy skills into the burgeoning maritime security sector.

The training will take place at the Offshore Marine Academy premises in Bristol and will be delivered in partnership with MTCS. Full training facilities with individual work stations will ensure every course participant receives full hands-on experience throughout the course.

Certification:
Successful candidates who have 12 months sea service will achieve an internationally recognised Ship Security Officer certificate, approved by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA). Candidates without 12 months sea service will achieve a Certificate of Proficiency in Performing Designated Security Duties at Sea.
